May 4th - The players came out of the wood works this morning for the games. Two fields were required for the turnout.

One run decided the contest on Fred White Field. The winning squad scored all but two of the 19 runs from the first five batters in the lineup. Leadoff hitter Vassurl Bess and Jim Laffoon each scored four runs and batted 4 for 5. Powerful Chuck Duff also scored four runs as he hit 5 for 5 with two homers and three doubles.

The home team scored all of their runs in four frames. They began with five runs in the first and followed with four in the second.

Needing eight runs to tie heading into the bottom of the seventh, the good guys hit well but came up one short. After the first batter made an out, Kirk Coffman singled. The next batter also reached base. Rich Moots and Bob Cooper followed with base raps. Greg Bombard connected for a two out single later in the inning. Lefty Neil Gelpi singled in the final run.

The final score was 19-18. Pitcher Larry Wells picked up the win.

LEADING HITTERS:

Chuck Duff: 5 for 5 with 2 homers & 3 doubles.
Rich Moots: 4 for 4 with 1 walk.
Vassurl Bess: 4 for 5 with 1 triple.
Jim Laffoon: 4 for 5.

The final score on Field D resembled a football game and had a wild finish.

The home team was down six runs when it was their turn to bat in the fourth inning. Bob Zelazny and Ted Taylor began with singles before the next batter reached base on an infield error. Singles by Ken Ota and Dennis Holder followed the error. The first out was made when opposing pitcher George Radlein recorded a strikeout. He finished with a whopping nine strikeouts and surpassed the off season record of eight, set by Eddie Diaz on April 6, 2009. Les Wolff singled after the whiff. The tying two runs scored when Dean Schapeler had a gapper hit. Unfortunately for Dean, he got credit for a double instead of a homer because a home run would have given his team a two run lead after being down six runs.

The visiting team scored seven runs in the last frame. The inning started when Sam Harrell burned the leftfielder for an inside-the-park homer. Bernie Mohan tripled after the dinger by Sam. Six straight singles were grouped together after two outs were in the books. The base hits came from the bats of Clair Auchey, Al Andrews, Russ King, Doug Chamlee, Frank Acevedo, and George Radlein.

The home team was down 14 runs by the time the damage was done in the top of the ninth. Literally scores of hits were accumulated by the home squad. Fred Ducham and Ron Thompson both doubled and singled in the frame, Dean Schapeler and Bob Zelazny each tripled and singled, and Ted Taylor connected for a two bagger.

The final score was 29-26 with George Radlein recording the win.

LEADING HITTERS:

Al Andrews: 6 for 6 with 1 triple & 2 doubles.
Bernie Mohan: 5 for 5 with 1 triple.
Doug Chamlee: 5 for 5 with 1 double & 1 sacrifice fly.
Clair Auchey: 5 for 6 with 1 homer & 2 doubles.

Inside-the-park homers on both fields: Chuck Duff had 2 homers. One each for Clair Auchey, Jack Benson, Kirk Coffman, Sam Harrell, Ken Ota, & Bob Zelazny.

Several players will be heading back home before the next game. Glenn Holland will be going back to Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Ed Kline to Mt. Vernon, Ohio; Hector Marinacci to Windsor, Ontario, Canada; and Ted Taylor is going back to Markham, Ontario, Canada.

The Winter Haven Senior Softball Club games have been cancelled for Friday, May 7th. The fields will be used by city employees for their annual sporting events.

May 11th - One field was used for the game this morning so the three team game was contested on Fred White Field.

The wind was blowing quite strong during the game. The outfielders had to contend with some floating softballs as the currents swept the old pill around in the air. The right side of the outfield was pushing the ball in while the leftfielders seemed to drift back on routine fly balls.

The first team had their troubles at the plate most of the day. They were 10 down heading into the top of the second inning and exploded for their best offensive frame of any of the three teams. Les Wolff started the inning with a single and ended it with the third out. After Les singled, Jim McPartlan worked the pitcher to a full count before drawing a walk. Gene Baker, who took a runner from home, singled and so did lead off hitter Sam Lopez. The first occurred when Fred Dampier sacrificed a runner home when he lined out to left centerfielder Al Andrews. Afterwards, Chuck Duff singled and Jim Laffoon doubled. Before the inning was over, Larry Wells, Richard Marino, and Marvin Taylor also connected for base knocks.

The middle team began strong by putting up five runs in the first. Clair Auchey, batting in the one hole, doubled to begin the inning. Dean Schapeler drove Clair home with a base hit, then advanced to third when Neil Gelpi turned a single into a double with his speed. In between two errors, Rusty Landahl and George Radlein had base raps.

Team Two managed four runs in the fifth. Neil Gelpi smashed an inside-the-park homer beyond the reach of leftfielder Richard Marino for a solo shot. After that, Don Witmerm Bernie Mohan, and Rusty Landahl each singled . A two bagger by George Radlein drove home the final two runs of the frame.

The home team proved to be too much offensively for the other two teams. They scored the maximum five runs in the first three innings. Those 15 runs would be enough to win the game. Every player in the 12 man lineup scored at least one run in those three frames. Al Andrews, Doug Chamlee, and Russ King each went 2 for 2 with two singles, Robert Humphrey smashed two doubles in two trips to the plate, and Walt Leggett doubled and singled. Wally Granger scored twice on a double and a walk, Rich Moots reached base on two errors and scored both times.

The final score was 10-14-20. Pitcher Ted Gransoki picked up a win.

Some nice fielding plays were executed during the contest. Leftfielder Richard Marino ran as fast as his legs could carry him to track down a fly ball from the bat of Neil Gelpi. The opposite field drive was tailing toward the foul fence but Richard chased it down and ended up colliding with the barrier. Nice grab Richard.

Shortstop Jim Laffoon made two sparking plays at his position. He had to go deep in the hole towards third base to stop one grounder. He turned and threw to second but the runner was safe when the throw wasn't caught. Jim also nabbed a grounder up the middle and had time to make a sharp and accurate throw to first baseman Larry Wells for the out.

Second baseman Lee Baker caught a line drive from the bat of Jim Laffoon for an out. Had Lee not been able to corral the ball, Jim surely would have gone for extra bases.

LEADING HITTERS:

Russ King: 3 for 3 with 1 double.
Ted Granoski: 3 for 3.
Robert Humphrey: 2 for 2 with 2 doubles & 1 sacrifice fly.
Neil Gelpi: 3 for 4 with 1 homer & 2 doubles.
Clair Auchey: 3 for 4 with 2 doubles.
Al Andrews: 3 for 4 with 1 double.
Jim Laffoon: 3 for 4 with 1 double.
Don Witmer: 3 for 4.

Neil Gelpi hit the only inside-the-park homer on Fred White Field this morning.

There were no games this past Friday and one player headed back home this past weekend. Denny Shaffer returned to Akron, Ohio. See you in the fall, Denny.

May 14th - It appears that all the snowbirds have migrated back north for the summer so the league is back to the bare bones of the year round players.

The attendance was high enough to merit a three team game on Fred White Field.

After the first team was put down in order with no ball hit out of the infield against pitcher Ted Granoski, the middle squad came to bat. The first two batters were also unable to hit the ball into the outfield. With two outs in the books, Robert Humphrey hit a hard grounder that was out of the range of the shortstop. A bad hop in the outfield allowed Robert to circle the bases for an inside-the-park homer.

The lead off batter and number two hitter fared exactly the same for the home team as the other two teams. They grounded out. The third batter, Jim Laffoon, singled and raced to third when Roger Edwards doubled to leftfield. A two bagger by Russ King drove home the only two runs for Team Three.

The second inning was not very exciting for any of the teams. Larry Wells singled for Team One, took a runner at first, and the pinch runner scored on a base rap by George Radlein. Larry finished the day with a 3 for 3 performance and his pinch runner from first base scored three times. After the run scoring hit by George, the next batter grounded into a 6-11-3 double play. Shortstop Jim Laffoon scooped the ball, flipped to rover Russ King, and Russ relayed it to first baseman Dick Sessink for the inning ending DP.

The home team took command and opened the game up when they pushed across the maximum five runs in the third. Newcomer Steve Brown singled to begin the rally and Sam Lopez tripled in the gap between the right centerfielder and rightfielder. Ron Butler singled Sam home before Jim Laffoon slammed a double. The third extra base hit of the inning was produced by Roger Edwards, who tripled to leftfield. Rich Moots had a two out single to drive home the fifth and final run.

With three innings complete, the score stood at 1-2-7. The five spot by the home team moved them to the top of the pack.

Team One responded with four in the fourth. The first batter grounded out before Don Witmer worked the count full and then walked. Consecutive singles by Chuck Duff, Larry Wells, and George Radlein scored two runs. Opposing pitcher Ted Granoski struck out the next batter for the second out and two more base hits came from the bats of Rusty Landahl and Ray Mills.

The bats from Team Two were fairly quiet but they managed two runs in the fourth frame to double their output. Robert Humphrey connected for a one out triple and Fred Dampier drove Robert home with a double. Fred legged it home when Reg Barnes singled up the middle.

The score was 5-4-7 after four innings of play.

The third team scored seven in the last two frames and coasted to a victory. Seven straight base knocks gave the team five runs in the sixth. Dick Sessink, Ted Granoski, Ed Neumyer, Les Wolff, Steve Brown, Sam Lopez, and Ron Butler all achieved singles in the sixth inning.

The final score was 8-5-15. Ray Mills picked up a win since his team scored eight but allowed only five runs. Ted Granoski pitched for the team that scored 15 and gave up eight runs so he chalked up a win, too.

LEADING HITTERS:
Steve Brown: 3 for 3.
George Radlein: 3 for 3.
Larry Wells: 3 for 3.
Sam Lopez: 3 for 4 with 1 triple.
Ron Butler: 3 for 4.

Robert Humphrey hit an inside-the-park homer on Fred White Field this morning.

One new player tried out the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club today. Steve Brown played the catcher position for the home team. Please come back and join, Steve.

May 18th - The fields were in playing condition after the torrential downpour the previous evening. The grounds crew is to be commended for preparing the infield on Fred White Field so the league could play this morning.

The first team of three began with a bang and held a comfortable lead through three innings of play. They did end up on top but the other two squads made valiant comeback efforts.

Jim Laffoon singled and connected for a solo inside-the park homer in the first three frames for Team One. He also scored both times he batted.

The bottom of the lineup did their job, too. The last four batters are perhaps credited with the reason Team One won the game. John Merritt scored twice as he went 2 for 3 on the day. Four of the 13 runs were scored in the lower third of the batting order.

The middle team came back from an eight run deficit to come within two runs of a tie when all the dust had settled. The top four batters scored all but one of the 11 total runs. Regis Finnegan stood out with his potent bat. He smashed a triple and two doubles in four at bats. Regis scored all three times he safely reached base. Neil Gelpi also scored three runs as he went 3 for 3 along with one walk.

The home team finished with the least amount of runs in the three team contest. Ron Butler ended the day with an inside-the-park home run and a base hit in four trips to the plate. George Radlein lead the team with a 1.000 batting average. He had a triple and two base knocks. George made it all the way to third base twice and second base once but was unable to find his way home any time during the contest.

The final score was 13-11-10. Ted Granoski recorded a win as his team scored 13 and gave up 11 runs. Credit Dennis Holder with a victory, too. That team scored 11 runs while allowing 10.

There was one exceptional defensive play made on Fred White Field this morning. Reg Barnes was stationed just to the first base side of second base while playing the rover position. Gene Baker stepped to the plate and hit a hard line shot that everyone thought was heading to right centerfield for a base hit. But Reg had other ideas. He had just enough time to take one step and reach high to snag the potential hit. Nice grab, Reg.

The home team's last inning rally was snubbed with an alert double play by the defense of Team Two. With a runner on first and second base, Richard Marino lined out to leftfielder Dean Schapeler. Dean made a nice catch and noticed the runner from second had wandered off the base just a bit too far. An accurate throw to rover Reg Barnes doubled up the runner.

LEADING HITTERS:
George Radlein: 3 for 3 with 1 triple.
Neil Gelpi: 3 for 3 with 1 walk.
Regis Finnegan: 3 for 4 with 1 triple & 2 doubles.
Dean Schapeler: 3 for 4 with 1 triple & 1 double.
Chris Constantine: 3 for 4.

Inside-the-park home runs: Ron Butler and Jim Laffoon.

Chuck Duff volunteered to umpire behind the plate this morning. Thank you for your services, Chuck.

One player joined while another gave it a try. Steve Brown joined the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club. He is retired and is a full time resident of Auburndale. Welcome aboard, Steve.

Jack Clark played this morning. He is a perspective new member. Jack is retired and moved to the area from Ocean View, New Jersey. Thank you for playing today, Jack. Please return and join our league.

May 21st - The temperature at game time was around the 86° F marker. There was a very slight wind blowing warm air. The dugout felt like an oven.

The three team game was contested for seven innings and every team had a chance to win this one.

The offense for Team One didn't begin until the first two batters were out to start the game. Don Scarbrough and Fred Dampier had base hits and Ron Thompson drew the first of his three walks in the game. Sam Harrell singled in one run on his bases loaded line drive to leftfield.

Team Two fared somewhat better. Chris Constantine began with a base knock but was forced at second when the next batter grounded into a fielder's choice to third baseman Fred Dampier. Don Witmer singled before the two bagger by Neil Gelpi drove in a pair of runs. After the next batter grounded out to rover Sam Harrell, both Larry Wells and Carl Luebking connected for singles.

Russ King was penciled into the lead off slot for the home squad. He commented that was the first time he batted lead off since his sophomore year in high school. Russ responded with a single. Number two man Roger Edwards walked and a double by Ron Butler drove home one run. A sacrifice fly by Chuck Duff added another run and Regis Finnegan had an RBI base hit. A nifty 1-11-3 double play ended the inning. Pitcher Dennis Holder fielded a grounder that took a giant hop right over the protective pitching screen. He threw to rover Carl Luebking and Carl finished the twin killing with an accurate throw to first baseman Bob Christiansen.

The score stood at 1-4-3 after the completion of one inning of play.

Three hits accounted for two runs in the top of the second frame. Rusty Landahl singled and Ted Granoski doubled up the middle. With runners on second and third, Clair Auchey came through with a two RBI single. A line drive out to Roger Edwards resulted in a double play ball to end the inning. Roger caught the ball and relayed it back to shortstop Ron Butler. Ron threw back to first baseman Joel Freedman to double off the retreating Clair, who had made it half way to second by the time Roger made the grab. Although Joel's foot wasn't on the bag until after Clair made it back safely, the call went against the runner, and the out ended the rally.

The home team racked up five runs in the third to take a 6-7-8 lead after three. Gale Doty began with a base rap. After the hit, Russ King had a nice opposite field hit in the direction of rightfielder John Merritt. The rough outfield caused an erratic bounce so the ball escaped the glove of John for an inside-the-park home run. Roger Edwards singled after the homer but was out at second when the next batter grounded into a fielder's choice. Chuck Duff then hit a ball that eluded John Merritt for the second two run homer in the inning. After the next batter grounded out to shortstop Don Witmer, Sam Lopez and George Radlein each singled. A walk to Richard Marino loaded the bases for Joel Freedman, who immediately singled in the fifth and final run.

The big inning for the second team came in the fourth frame. Bunches of singles were responsible for the five runs. John Merritt, Chris Constantine, Bob Zelazny, Don Witmer, Neil Gelpi, and Larry Wells all had base hits. The single by Larry Wells drove home the last run.

The final score was 13-16-14. Dennis Holder pitched for the team that scored 16 and gave up 14 runs. George Radlein was on the mound for the squad that scored 14 runs and surrendered 13, so George recorded one in the win column.

LEADING HITTERS:
Don Scarbrough: 5 for 5.
Don Witmer: 4 for 4 with 1 homer.
Chuck Duff: 3 for 3 with 1 homer, 1 triple, & 1 sacrifice fly.
Ted Granoski: 3 for 3 with 1 double & 1 walk.
Chris Constantine: 3 for 3 with 1 sacrifice fly.
Ron Thompson: 2 for 2 with 3 walks.
Russ King: 4 for 5 with 1 homer & 1 double.
Sam Harrell: 4 for 5.
Neil Gelpi: 3 for 4 with 2 doubles.
George Radlein: 3 for 4 with 1 double.
Roger Edwards: 3 for 4 with 1 walk.
Rusty Landahl: 3 for 4.

Inside-the-park home runs: Chuck Duff, Russ King, and Don Witmer.

May 22nd - Saturday - The Sebring All Stars traveled to Nalcrest to challenge the Lakeshore All Stars in a wood bat doubleheader at Nalcrest Eagles Field. Regino "Gutey" Gutierrez piloted the Lakeshore team.

Joe Nittoli and Fred Dampier opened the bottom of the first with consecutive singles but were stranded at first and second base when the tight defense of Sebring took over. In fact, Lakeshore could not manage to score a run through three innings.

After Sebring went down in the fourth, Ray Jiminez connected for a one out single. Miguel Negron, who reached base on a booted ball by the second baseman, advanced to second. Ray was erased on a fielder's choice grounder hit by Gary Quartana. No runs had scored up to that point. Then Angel Merced stepped to the plate and drove a deep shot over the left centerfielder's head for a two out, two run triple. A single by J.C. Crowell knocked Angel home. Jay Ortiz singled afterwards before the inning came to an end.

Lakeshore lead 3-0 after the completion of four innings of play.

The Sebring bats came alive in the fifth frame. Along with some sloppy defense, Sebring was able to score the maximum five runs.

Lakeshore answered with five runs of their own in the home fifth. Joe Nittoli and Fred Dampier banged out consecutive base raps to begin the rally and Matt McKulvey reached base on a misplayed ground ball. A double by Miguel Negron cleared the bases. The blast by Miguel burned the rightfielder. Ray Sanchez followed with a deep hit to leftfield for a triple. Four runs had already scored and there was only one out, so the Sebring pitcher walked Gary Quartana and Angel Merced to load the bases. A ground ball to the shortstop scored Ray Sanchez for the fifth run.

At the end of five innings, Lakeshore held an 8-5 lead.

Sebring tied the score with three in the sixth. Both teams were held to a goose egg in the seventh. Sebring had another zero in the eighth as the game went into extra innings.

Gary Morra and Joe Nittoli singled to start the home eighth. Fred Dampier got aboard on a misplayed grounder at second. The bases were loaded and one run was needed for the victory. Matt McKulvey flew out to short left centerfield for out number one. The hit wasn't deep enough for a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Miguel Negron, saved the day with a single.

The Lakeshore All Stars won Game One of the doubleheader by a score of 9-8. Joe Nittoli was the winning pitcher.

Joe Nittoli batted 4 for 5 and Angel Merced went 2 for 3 with one triple and one walk.

After a fifteen minute break from the hot 90° F weather, the second game began. Some changes were made to the Lakeshore lineup. Matt McKulvey twisted his ankle in the first game and was replaced with Tim Gibson. Sam Harrell took the mound for the game, Dave Newman replaced Jay Ortiz, and Ron Hullings was chosen to catch. Also, Alberto Guerrero took J.C. Crowell's place at third.

A total of 10 Sebring All Stars made the trip to Nalcrest so they didn't have anyone on the bench in case a change was needed. One of the Sebring players couldn't stand the heat and bowed out of the second game, so Gary Morra was moved to the Sebring team for Game Two.

Lakeshore couldn't manage a run in the second contest. Fred Dampier and Ray Jiminez each batted 2 for 3, but the hits by Lakeshore were few and far in between. Alberto Guerrero, Sam Harrell, and Ron Hullings each had one base hit apiece.

Sam Harrell did a fine job holding down the bats of Sebring. The final score was 1-0 in favor of the Sebring All Stars.

May 25th - The Winter Haven Parks and Recreation Department crew was working on the fields this morning in an attempt to improve the condition of the outfields. Since the fields were resodded in August of 2009, the outfields have not been smooth and level.

Four of the fields were being rolled one at a time and all fields have been aerated. As a result, only one diamond was made available for play today.

Each of the three teams had 13 players in the lineup but only 11 were allowed to play defense. The games were contested on Fred White Field.

All three squads put numbers on the board to open the game. Two inside-the-park homers were the results of bad hops in the lumpy outfield. Carl Luebking hit a two run home run after Ron Thompson singled and Neil Gelpi had a solo shot. All three safe hits were to rightfield. Dean Schapeler and Bob Christiansen scored in the first inning, too. Dean singled, Bob walked, followed by base knocks from Larry Wells and Sam Harrell. Sam drove home the fifth run of the frame.

Chuck Duff hit the first of his two inside-the-park homers in the middle of the first. He drove home Vassurl Bess and Ron Butler. Both teammates had base hits before the tater. Bob Zelazny had a two out base hit but was still standing on first when the last out was recorded.

The bottom of the first was productive, too. Kirk Coffman singled and scored when Brent Alumbaugh smashed a double. Wally Granger doubled after him and Fred Dampier singled. A sacrifice fly by Elvis Abney sent the third run home. A single by Marvin Taylor moved Fred to third and a base rap by Ken Ota accounted for the fourth and final run of the inning.

After the explosive first inning for all three teams, things settled down for a while. The home team scored one in the second. Dennis Holder started with a single and scored after two out base hits from Joltin' Joe DeForge, Frank Acevdeo, and Kirk Coffman.

Team Two got one in the third when Richard Marino reached base on an infield error and strolled to second on a Jim McPartlan free pass. Richard scored from a Vassurl Bess base hit.

Team One put up a zero in both the second and third frames.

Neil Gelpi began the top of the fourth with a triple and scored when the next batter grounded out. Bob Christiansen hit a double down the rightfield line and scored after Sam Harrell and Reg Barnes singled. An RBI hit by Walt Leggett rounded out the scoring opportunities for Team One in the fourth inning.

Team Two came out with a bang in their part of the fourth. Ron Butler singled and Chuck Duff banged his second home run. He ended with five RBIs for the game. Back-to-back doubles by Freddy Gonzalez and Bob Zelazny followed, then base hits by George Radlein and Eddie Diaz. A single by Richard Marino was the final blow since that hit drove home the fifth run.

The home team took over in the fifth and sixth to wrap up the game. Joltin' Joe DeForge, Frank Acevedo, and Brent Alumbaugh all scored in the fifth. Wally Granger had a two run double and Fred Dampier sacrificed in a run with a fly ball to rightfield.

Five runs scored for the home team in the sixth on a round of singles. Marvin Taylor, Rich Moots, Clair Auchey, Joltin' Joe DeForge, Frank Acevedo, and Kirk Coffman all had base hits in their last chance to bat.

The final score was 10-12-13. Marvin Taylor picked up a win for his pitching efforts.

LEADING HITTERS:
Bob Zelazny: 3 for 3 with 1 double.
Vassurl Bess: 3 for 3.
Marvin Taylor: 3 for 3.
Bob Christiansen: 2 for 2 with 1 double & 1 walk.
Joltin' Joe DeForge: 2 for 2 with 1 walk.
Fred Dampier: 1 for 1 with 1 walk & 1 sacrifice fly.
Frank Acevedo: 3 for 4.
Kirk Coffman: 3 for 4.

Inside-the-park home runs: Chuck Duff had two homers and one each were hit by Neil Gelpi, Sam Lopez, and Carl Lubeking.

May 28th - The final game in May was played this morning. Three teams battled each other but one was just a bit lax in the run production department.

Larry Powell and Regis Finnegan each scored four times as Team One finished with 17 runs on the board. Larry Wells finished with a 5 for 6 performance. Larry seems to be a streak hitter and he was on target today. Lee Baker hit well. He went 2 for 4 and connected for his first double this year. Lee also drew a walk and leads in that off season stats department with 10 free passes.

The second team also scored 17 runs so Team One pitcher Marvin Taylor was credited with a tie.

Team Two had two batters who circled the bases for inside-the-park home runs. Speedy Neil Gelpi accomplished that feat in the opening inning. He had three RBIs on that dinger because Vassurl Bess and Don Scarbrough hit their way on base with singles.

Clair Auchey hit a two run homer in the second frame. Once again, Vassurl Bess was on base at the time. He drew a walk before Clair went to bat.

Richard Marino went 4 for 4 and had a quotable quote for the reporter. Unaware that Richard had hit a perfect 1.000 for the game, the reporter was approached by Richard, who said, "For the record, that's M-A-R-I-N-O." Thanks Richard.

The home team had their troubles. Ron Thompson came to bat in the first and hit a grounder down the rightfield line. Since the ball got by the outfielder, Ron put it into third gear and began rounding the bases. By the time he was on his way home, shortstop Clair Auchey had gotten the relay throw from the outfield. He fired home. Just as Ron touched home, the high throw barely missed the outreached glove of catcher Gene Baker. The old pill hit Ron flush above the left eye. Ron staggered a couple of more steps, then slowly fell to the ground. The next thing he said after he came back to consciousness was "I see people again." He had a cut above his eye and and his sunglasses put a small gash in his nose. Umpire Chuck Duff took charge and attended to Ron. Two teammates helped the fallen player off the field and the inning continued. To Ron's credit, the gamer didn't miss an inning. He took his position at shortstop after the frame was complete.
Later in the game, Roger Edwards singled and advanced to third on a George Radlein base rap. When Roger was approaching third, third baseman Sam Harrell was attempting to catch the wild relay throw. Sam swung around and caught Roger with a fist to the nose. A crack was heard by some players and Roger was replaced with a pinch runner. He may have broken his nose.

George Radlein lead Team Three in hitting as he went 4 for 4. Gale Doty was close behind with a .750 day. He had three singles in four trips to the plate.

The final score was 17-17-4. Ted Granoski recorded a win as the team he pitched for scored 17 runs while giving up only four while on defense.

LEADING HITTERS:
Richard Marino: 4 for 4 with 1 double.
George Radlein: 4 for 4.
Larry Wells: 5 for 6 with 1 double.
Don Scarbrough: 4 for 5 with 1 triple.
Gale Doty: 3 for 4.

Inside-the-park home runs: Clair Auchey, Neil Gelpi, and Ron Thompson.

May 31st - Monday - A total of 20 games have been played since the season ended. Incidentally, the National League players ended their season three games before the American League.

Listed are the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club leaders through 20 off season games.

The off season record for triples is in jeopardy. Don Witmer accumulated 18 triples in 2008. Barring injury or other reasons to miss games, Sam Lopez is on course to obliterate the record.
