January 5th - The very last preseason games were played today & four fields were utilized to accommodate the great influx of ballplayers who showed up for the games.
Due to an upcoming tournament, Fred White Field was unavailable.  Field B was used, although a temporary fence was erected in the outfield 200 feet from home plate.  Also, a game took place on Field A, which is used for the college women fast pitch team & sports 225 foot fences.  On both fields, balls hit over the fence were ruled as doubles. The season games begin Tuesday, January 9th.  The only players who need to sign-in are the pool players & they should sign-in at the red bench next to the building door.  Jack Valliere is in charge of the pool players this season.   Everyone on team rosters should report to the appropriate field as indicated on the game schedule to warmup & have batting practice before the game.  On the schedule, the home team utilizes the 3rd base dugout so please keep that in mind.  All the game schedules should have already been handed out by the manager.  Be sure to wear your team shirt & cap or you will be out-of-uniform & cannot play.  Sorry guys, but rules are rules; no exceptions in this case.  Gray shirts were handed out with team shirts.  The gray shirts with the small softball logo with the words "Winter Haven Senior Softball" surrounding the softball is not a team shirt. The home team is responsible for returning all the equipment back to the building after the game.  Don't forget the bat & bat rack in the visitors dugout & the scoreboard marker, which is an often forgotten item.  The clipboard & scoresheet must be returned to Fred Dampier.  Everyone's help is greatly appreciated. Let's all have another fun season this year.  Good luck guys.

One of the sponsors, Merrill Lynch, hosted an after game luncheon at the DiamondPlex.  The two items served were fried chicken purchased from another sponsor, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and hot dogs.  Soda & cold beer were the available drinks for the gathering today.  The ballplayers, spectators, & the DiamondPlex grounds crew were all invited. The fields were still set up for the girls fastpitch tournament so the game that normally would have taken place on Fred White Field was moved to Field A.  The contest pitted Center State Bank Gray against Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold.  Every ball hit over the fence was a ground rule double.  There were 17 doubles hit in that park today but many of them didn't sail over the short fence. The other two games on the 300' fence fields were both one-sided, with Play It Again Sports Red & Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal coming out on top as victors.

January 12th - Play It Again Sports Red continued their winning ways with a victory over Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal on the Field A.  This time, there were 18 doubles and most cleared the 225 foot fence.  Doug McLellan led the charge with three doubles.
On Field D, Fred Dampier hit two inside-the-park gapper homers in a losing effort for Brian's Tree Service Turquoise.  One of the home runs was a late inning grand slam that brought the team within four runs of tying the game.  The earlier homer by Fred was the first of back-to-back homers; the second dinger was hit by Randy Lane. The winning pitcher for Riverside Bank Black, Dick Sessink, removed himself from the mound after being hit in the hand by a hard line drive.  Bobby Ayers finished the game for the winning team. The final four runs of the five run Center State Bank Gray 8th scored on a grand slam home run by Jim Laffoon.  The homer sailed over the fence on Field E.  Going into the bottom of the inning, Center State Bank Gray had a 14-8 lead.  Beef O'Bradys Kelly wasn't to be denied though.  The team came back with five runs of their own on a six hit inning.  A double by Al Andrews capped off the frame.  Neither team scored in the final inning so the Grays won 14-13.

January 16th - With the help of two homers by Ron Augenstein, Riverside Bank Black held on for a 23-21 win after leading 18-6 going into the bottom of the 8th inning.  There is no quit in Play It Again Sports Red because the team scored eight runs in the 8th & seven runs in the 9th for a valiant attempt at a tremendous comeback.  Denny Shaffer blasted a home run in the 8th inning in the losing effort.  As the highlight of the 9th inning, Ken King connected for a grand slam homer.  In all, there were 15 hits & 15 runs in the last two frames for the Reds.
Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal won a close game against Center State Bank Gray by a score of 15-12.  Wayne Mundy, the new addition for the Royals, hit a two run homer early in the game.  Wayne was placed on the team after Chris Constantine has failed to show up for the team since the season began. The bottom of the lineup produced in a clutch situation for the Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold today.  Going into the bottom of the 9th inning, Brian's Tree Service Turquoise was clinging to a three run lead.  Hits by Marshall Bloom, Gene Morey, Bob Sciamanna, & Ed Kline tied the game.  Lead off hitter Fred Ducham sealed the victory with a grounder single just out of reach of the shortstop.

A new player joined the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club.  Hal Ridley resides in Canada & is a friend of Hugh Lessard.  Welcome aboard Hal. January 19th - The game of Fred White Field was the first of the battle of the banks as Riverside Bank Black played against Center State Bank Gray.  A five run 8th inning rally secured the victory for the only undefeated team in the league.  The Riverside Bank Black record moved to 3-0 as the team put together seven straight hits with no outs in the 8th frame.  The final four batters in the lineup scored as well as the lead off hitter.  Joel Freedman, Bill McDonough, & pool players Joe D'Herin & Ed Kline crossed the plate followed by lead off hitter John Ormsby in the game deciding inning.
Although they never had the lead, Center State Bank Gray came from behind to knot the score at 18-18 before they allowed the five runs in the bottom of the inning.  Four straight hits by the bottom of that lineup were produced by Bob Martin, Bob Douglas, Terry Feehan, & pool player Bill Cook.  The lead off batter, Freddy Gonzalez, cranked a homer for the final hit of the inning. There is one final note to report for the game.  Dick Sessink flew out in his final at bat for the day to end his streak of 12 succsssive hits to begin the season.  He is also the pitcher for the Blacks so his consecutive streak continues with three wins. The quest for the first win took place on Field D as 0-3 Brian's Tree Service Turquoise took on 0-2 Beef O'Bradys Kelly.  Contrary to one prediction, the score didn't end in a tie after the 10th inning so no winner could be declared and the records for the two teams would remain at zero wins.  Instead, the Trees scored in all but two innings to dominate the 18-5 game.  Lead off batter Fred Dampier cracked his bat on his first hit of the day, used it for two more hits before noticing the crack, & went on to go 5 for 5 on the day. Pool player Larry Powell noticed the leftfielder wasn't playing him to pull & threaded a grounder down the 3rd base line for an inside-the-park solo homer for the Kellys. The pitcher for the Trees, Larry Williamson, finished the game in style as he struck out the first two batters in the 9th, then allowed two singles before striking out the last batter of the game. The closest game of the day pitted Play It Again Sports Red against Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold & the Gold shined for a 19-18 win. After the Reds held the lead the entire game, they failed to score in the 7th inning.  That opened the door for a home team Gold rally of five runs in the bottom of the frame.  Doug Graham, the hot hitter for the team, connected for a triple & scored the fifth run on a single by Ken Wilson with one out.
LEADING HITTERS: Riverside Bank Black Elmer Black - 5 for 5 with 1 double & 1 homer. John Ormsby - 4 for 5 with 1 double & 2 triples. Dick Sessink - 3 for 4. Bill McDonough - 3 for 4. Center State Bank Gray Ray DePalma - 5 for 5 with 1 triple & 1 homer. Jim Laffoon - 4 for 5 and hit for cycle. Bob Martin - 3 for 4. Bill Cook - 3 for 4. Brian's Tree Service Turquoise Fred Dampier - 5 for 5 with 1 double. Cal Leigh - 2 for 2 with 1 double, 1 walk, & 1 sacrifice fly. Rusty Landahl - 3 for 4. Richard Moots - 3 for 4. Cecil Vasquez - 4 for 5 with 2 doubles. Marshall Bloom - 4 for 5 with 1 triple. Play It Again Sports Red Ken King - 3 for 3 with 1 walk. Doug McLellan - 3 for 4 with 1 triple & 1 homer. Don Witmer - 3 for 4 with 1 homer. Jim McPartlan - 3 for 4. January 23rd - The lead changed hands eight times in a see-saw game that was won by Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal in the bottom of the 9th inning today against winless Beef O'Bradys Kelly.  In the 4th inning, the Kellys took the lead for the second time when they scored 5 runs on four hits sprinkled with three walks.  Each of the free passes scored in the frame.  Ed Guspyt connected for a two run homer in that frame.
The Royals regained the lead in the very next inning on a two run double by clean up hitter Don Erb. The back and forth contest continued through the 9th inning as the Kellys scored three runs and regained the lead.  Going into the bottom of the inning, the Kellys were clinging to a 17-16 lead.  True to the game's form, the Royals rallied and scored the necessary two runs to win the game.  A ground out by Ed Schmiedeke scored Dick Erickson from 3rd base. It took 10 innings for Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold to hand Riverside Bank Black their first loss of the young season.  The Blacks had a huge 9th inning as they scored 8 runs.  Big hits in the inning were doubles by Bill Evans & Art Zakrowski & a triple by Ron Augenstein. The Gold had to score four runs in the bottom of the 9th just to stay afloat.  Marshall Bloom drove in the tying run with a one out single. After the Blacks were blanked in the 10th, the Gold responded with the one run needed to seal the victory. Brian's Tree Service Turquoise held their own against the very tough lineup of Play It Again Sports Red.   The Reds were able to add power hitters Freddy Gonzalez & Bobby Ayers to the lineup due to the luck of the draw for pool players. The five run 8th inning was too much for the Trees to overcome as the Reds hit their way to victory.
LEADING HITTERS: Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal Cliff Hamilton - 5 for 5. Ernie Lancto - 2 for 2 with 1 double & 2 walks. Ed Guspyt - 3 for 4 with 1 double & 1 homer. On a sad note, Morris Rosenhack had a stroke on Sunday, January 21st.  He is in intensive care at this time.  We all are praying that you get well soon, Morris.  Everyone cares for you & we miss your presence at the old ballpark. Former Winter Haven Senior Softball Club member Dwight Pavkovich came by the ballpark & watched the games.  Dwight last played during the 2004 campaign.  Thanks for stopping by Dwight. January 26th - Everyone woke up to a cold morning as the temperature at the time the players began arriving was chilly and in the 40s° F.  It did warm up to readings in the 50s° F before the games were completed & the warm sun felt good on the cold bodies.
Returning from a bye date, the Center State Bank Gray handed Brian's Tree Service Turquoise their fifth loss in the 14-8 contest.  The Trees is the first team to complete the cycle by playing every opponent and the team has a record of 1-5 to show for their efforts. John Stewart contributed to the Grays win with two gapper homers.  A total of nine errors by the Trees team was a major factor in the outcome. Two teams collided on Field E that sported the same 3-1 win-loss record going into the game.  Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal out hit Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold & won the game 20-13.  Royals players Wayne Mundy, Floyd Welton, & Ray Petrie were unstoppable at the plate today.  Wayne & Floyd each went 4 for 4 & Ray went 3 for 3 with a walk. The game that went down to the wire pitted the powerhouse Riverside Bank Black against the winless Beef O'Bradys Kelly.  The Kellys came awake in the last three innings of the game as they scored 5 in the 7th to tie the game, scored 1 in the top of the 8th inning to take a brief lead until the Blacks scored 2 to regain the lead.  But today was the fateful day for the Kellys as they racked up 4 more in the 9th & held on to win 15-14.  Jaime Rivera broke out of his slow start with a 5 for 5 performance for the winning team.

Joe Hissey returned from Baltimore, Maryland to begin playing in the games today.  Welcome back, Joe. January 30th - The last game date in January was forecasted as a freezing day but the temperature was recorded at 40° F with just a hint of breeze.  It was pleasantly warm compared to the weather predictions from the previous evening news.
Kentucky Fried Chicken Gold glittered on Fred White Field as they defeated Beef O'Bradys Kelly 18-12.  Cecil Vasquez was unstoppable at the plate.  He went 4 for 4 with a double & a homer thrown into the mix.  Ken Wilson also homered for the Gold.  Herb Oesterreich hit well for the Kellys as he went 3 for 3 with a triple to go along with a walk. Play It Again Sports Red came back after a bye date to get back on the winning track.  The Reds outlasted Center State Bank Gray 20-14.  Doug McLellan cranked a homer for the winning team & Jim McPartlan had a super day offensively as he went 4 for 4 with a double.  Hank Gomez, who batted before Jim, went 3 for 3 with a sacrifice fly. The Grays had two players who didn't make an offensive out in the game. Jim Laffoon walked twice in between two singles & John Smith had three consecutive singles and was waiting in the on deck circle when the last out was recorded in the 9th inning. The Riverside Bank Black versus Jarrett-Gordon Ford Royal game on Field E had nothing but goose eggs for both sides during the middle innings.  The Blacks scored 9 runs in the first three frames & went on to lose 18-10.  Ray Petrie connected for a homer for the winning team.  The hits were practically even for the top of the lineup & the lower half but the Blacks couldn't put enough hits together to fend off the Royals, whose record now goes to a league leading 5-1.
