July 5th - Fourteen players from the Lakeland Senior Softball Club came to Winter Haven to play a game.  The final score was 30-21, with Lakeland on top.  Winter Haven did make a run towards the end of the game but came up short.
Lakeland used three pitchers for three innings apiece.  John Dascole started the game, Al Chase pithced the middle three innings, & George Radlein finished the game for Lakeland. July 26th - After 10 innings of play, the game today ended in an 11-11 tie.  Jack Hamon, a part time Winter Haven resident from Delaware, Ohio, pitched for the home team.  Freddy Gonzalez hit a two-run homerun.  Randy Lane scored after he got on base with a line shot single to leftfield.
The visiting team tied the score in the 9th inning when Jack Valliere literally stole home for the final run in the game. July 29th - The final score today was 10-9 as the tying run was thrown out at home plate in the top of the 9th inning to end the game.  Rich Palmer returned from the Senior Olympics in Pennsylvania to pitch for the home team & record the win.  The only homerun was a shot down the leftfield line by Kenny Duell.  The longest hit of the day was a one bouncer to the warning track in left centerfield by Jim Laffoon.
Terry Feehan returned for a week's vacation in Winter Haven.  Terry resides in Deshler, Ohio.  Welcome back, Terry and Rich. One other note to mention: Small cones have been placed in the outfield approximately 20 feet inside the hash marks already on the field to be used as markers for the outfielders to stand behind before the ball is hit.  This is a rule that was adopted from the Lakeland Senior Softball Club rules but the line in Winter Haven is further from home plate than the line in Lakeland.  The cones should eliminate the problem & the players are becoming accustomed to the new style of play. |
