June 2005 News Archive

June 7th - It was a very warm & humid morning but an interesting game was played today.  The final score was 22-2, but the interesting part was that Ted Granoski pitched a perfect game for the first four innings.  Reg Barnes got the first hit as he lead off the 5th inning.  In all, the losing team accumulated only five hits.  Besides Reg, the other hits were by Jose Agosto, Dwight Pavkovich, Rusty Landahl, & Dick Sessink.  Dwight's hit was a gapper homer between Fred Dampier in right centerfield & Ron Thompson in rightfield.

June 10th - A new player signed up to play Winter Haven Senior Softball.  Dale Reecy, a teacher in Polk County, will be playing during the summer.  Dale did well in his inaugural game.  He played right field, caught the only fly ball hit his way, fielded cleanly several ground ball base hits, made accurate throws to the cutoff man, & he batted 2 for 3 for the winning team today.  Welcome aboard, Dale.

June 14th - There was a huge turnout for the game as 31 players showed up to play.  The final score was 21-2-4.  Ted Granoski came close to pitching the only shutout in a Winter Haven Senior Softball Club game in recent memory.  Two runs were scored late in the contest to spoil the bid for the shutout.

Ron Thompson had a great day at the plate, driving in four of the first seven runs for his team.

Way to go, Ted & Ron.

Another new player has joined the ranks.  Jeff Young, a friend of Dale Reecy, began playing today.  Jeff played catcher for his team.  Welcome aboard, Jeff.

June 17th - A pamphlet was distributed to each ballplayer outlining the rule changes to immediately take effect.  Click HERE to see the changes.

June 21st - Joel Freedman missed the opportunity to play today due to an illness.  We wish him the best & hope to see him at the next game.

Gordy, the supervisor of the Diamond Plex, informed the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club that the park will be unavailable for play for the next three Fridays due to tournament play.  The dates are June 24th, July 1st, & July 8th.  Please mark on your calendar that there will be no game these three dates.

The teams for the game today were decided by the draw of cards since Joel wasn't in attendance.  The final score was 20-13.  Fred Dampier hit a three-run homerun & Dick Sessink blasted a solo shot.

The new rules went into effect today.  All went well & only one player overran the base, but he was able to get back to the base before the tag.  Some players think the white line rule for the outfielders isn't fair.  The line is over 20 feet further than the white line in Lakeland, which employs the same rule.

June 28th - A low turnout at the ballpark resulted in two teams of 10 players each.  Even though it was a humid & overcast day, disappointingly enough several guys quit after 6 1/2 innings with the home team winning 18-15.  Come on guys, it's going to get much hotter than it was today so let's finish the future games & play nine innings when there are two teams & save the seven inning games when there are enough players for three teams.  Jack Valliere was the winning pitcher in the shortened game.

The Lakeland Senior Softball Club will play the Winter Haven Softball Club this coming Tuesday, July 5th, at the Diamond Plex in Winter Haven.
