Sam Harrell set up the first of two double headers against a group of players from Solivita retirement community in Poinciana. The same Winter Haven team will play in Solivita in the near future. Solivita took the lead in the first inning of the first game and continued to add to it as the game progressed. Winter Haven was down by two after the first inning, down by three after three frames, and ended up losing by six runs. The most productive innings for Winter Haven took place in the third and sixth innings when the good guys scored three runs in each of the frames. In the third, Jack Valliere singled, followed by walks to Randy Lane and Fred Dampier. Jack scored when Cecil Vasquez reached on an error by the rightfielder but Randy was thrown out at home. Tim Gallagher then singled to score Fred and Jim Laffoon singled to score Cecil. In the sixth inning, back-to-back-to-back triples by Jim Laffoon, Bobby Ayers, & Doug Chamlee scored two runs before Chris Constantine hit a sacrifice fly to left centerfield. Team members, positions, and batting order were Cecil Vasquez (R), Tim Gallagher (LC), Freddy Gonzalez (LF), Jim Laffoon (SS), Bobby Ayers (3B), Doug Chamlee (1B), Chris Constantine (2B), Dick Sessink (P), Sam Harrell (C), Jack Valliere (DH), Randy Lane (RF), and Fred Dampier (RC).
The second game of the double header went much smoother for Winter Haven. Jim Laffoon set the stage in the first inning with a three run homer to rightfield, scoring Cecil Vasquez & Tim Gallagher ahead of him. Jim had a banner day at the plate, going 7 for 7 with three triples to go along with his homer. Bobby Ayers connected two singles to score Jim from third each time in the second game. Each of the two hits came with two outs already recorded in the scorebook. Bobby also ended the double header batting 1.000. He went 5 for 5 with two doubles, a triple, and two walks. The Winter Haven team never gave up the lead the entire game but Solivita came within one run when they scored five runs in the third inning to make the score 6-5. The Winter Haven fourth witnessed a two out grand slam homer by Fred Dampier following a walk to Dick Sessink and singles by Sam Harrell & Jack Valliere. The four runs by Winter Haven upped the lead to five going into the bottom of the fourth. Solivita could only send one runner across the plate in their turn at bat. Winter Haven scored five in the sixth on four hits and two walks to add to the lead. Winter Haven won the contest by the score of 18-10 and scored in every inning of the second game. The batting order remained the same but some players switched fielding positions. Chris Constantine was moved to 3B, Bobby Ayers was moved to P, Dick Sessink was moved to DH, and Jack Valliere was moved to 2B. Jerry Witter volunteered to umpire the first game and that was greatly appreciated. One of the Solivita players had to leave the ballpark before the second game and Jerry joined that team as their pitcher. He pitched the complete second game for Solivita.
