Winter Haven vs Kissimmee
August 15th, 2007




Winter Haven hosted the second meeting in a double header against the senior softball players from the Kissimmee morning league.
Winter Haven jumped off to a quick lead as they racked up five runs in the first inning. Wayne Mundy, Tim Gallagher, Jim Laffoon, Don Witmer, & Freddy Gonzalez all contributed with singles in the frame. A bases loaded, bases clearing triple by Fred Dampier topped off the frame.
Four runs followed in the third inning. A triple by Don Witmer drove in the final run.
Freddy Gonzalez blasted a solo home run to leftfield in the sixth inning for the final run of the game for Winter Haven.
Team members, positions, and batting order were Cecil Vasquez (2B), Wayne Mundy (SS), Tim Gallagher (LC), Jim Laffoon (3B), Ron Thompson (RF), Don Witmer (R), Freddy Gonzalez (LF), Fred Dampier (RC), Doug Chamlee (1B), Dick Sessink (P), Sam Harrell (C), John Fulton (OF), and Jack Valliere (DH).
Winter Haven Senior Softball Club member Elvis Abney graciously volunteered to call the balls & strikes behind the plate. Thank you Elvis.

After Winter Haven scored five runs in the third inning, it appeared that it would be a sweep for the good guys. The inning was sprinkled with Winter Haven base runners. Dick Sessink, Jack Valliere, & Wayne Mundy each collected singles while John Fulton & Tim Gallagher walked. A bases loaded, bases clearing double by Jim Laffoon capped off the inning.
Winter Haven took the sixth inning into high gear as they scored three runs. Cecil Vasquez, Tim Gallagher, Jim Laffoon, Ron Thompson, & Don Witmer each banged out singles.
Going into the bottom of the last frame, Winter Haven had a comfortable 11-6 lead but then the wheels fell off. Kissimmee got hit after hit after hit, scored six runs and won the game by the score of 12-11.
After the game, many of the ball players retreated to the American Legion Post 8 for cold refreshments and a noon time lunch.
