January 27th - No games today. All the fields had water standing in the infield and along the foul lines in the outfield. The forecast for today calls for an 80% chance of rain, so there is more to come.
The games that were rained out this morning will be played when the teams meet again. There will be a doubleheader, with each game going seven innings, divided by a fifteen minute break between games. Therefore, the National League will play two games this coming Tuesday, January 31st. The American League will play their doubleheader on Tuesday, February 21st.
When the games are made up as part of a doubleheader, the second game will be the make-up. Managers need to check the schedules for home team and visitors team before starting the second contest. Please use the back of the score sheet for the second game and indicate which game is the first and which one is the second as well as marking home and visitors on the sheet.
Please be sure to make a note on your calendar and account for more time at the old ballpark that day.
January 24th - Today was another beautiful day at the old ballpark with the thermometer in the high 70s and forecasted to level off at 82° F. Thank you, Mother Nature.
The bats of the Cubs just wouldn't let up against their foe, the Pirates, in the 29-17 game. Nine of the 13 hitters in the lineup are listed in the leading
hitters for the contest. Ed Guspyt and Jerry Remington each cranked the ball over the fence on Field A for ground rule doubles. Dick Mahon hit one over for the Pirates.
Braves pilot Rich Moots is getting the hang of things in his first year as manager. His team won a nail biter against the Rockies. The Braves and the Rockies were tied heading into the sixth inning of their game on Fred White Field. The Braves took a one run lead when John Stewart found a gap in the outfield and threaded
the needle for a triple. A single by Elmer Wilcox drove home the lead run at the time.
After both teams went scoreless in the seventh, the Braves unleashed their bats for the deciding runs, as it turned out. John Fulton, Bill Evans, and Bill Ayer all singled and scored. A double by Walt Leggett knocked the third run home, and Larry Goring lifted a fly ball to rightfielder Ron Deem for a sacrifice. The four runs in the eighth allowed the Braves to chip the Rockies by a score of 13-9.
In the American League games this morning, the Tigers came from behind, scoring three runs in the home eighth, to down the Yankees 15-14. The Royals let an eight run lead slip away and had to score three in the bottom of the ninth to win 16-15 against the Orioles. The first place Red Sox remained unbeaten by shutting down the Angels 20-14. Don Held hit four home runs in the game for the Sox. Now, that's a record that should stand for years to come unless Don beats his own mark.
